MGI 2013 Recap

2013 MGI – March – Final Recap –Miami Golf Invitational – Shula’s Golf Club Senator Course – Miami Lakes, Florida.

The format was changed for this year at the MGI, instead of being a team vs. team Ryder Cup style event, it turned into a 2 man team rotation play where you played best ball all three days and switched opponents after every 9 holes.

“It was a change ….I don’t care either way, but it did get a little anti climatic once our team wasn’t in the money” added Brad Smiley on the final day, “The group team event has a little more drama, and hopefully TK brings it back in 2014 Either way, I am in in and ready for MGI 2014!”

“I guess I should have made side action with everyone in my group, as I that is how this format is supposed to be played?” added a puzzled Mike Lynch

Goleno added, “I played this style last summer in Seattle, it was fun….there were like 50 teams.”

Going into the final round on Saturday, the team of TK and Mez had the lead with Grant and BK on their tail, but McLovin and Goo played a lights out final 18 to end in a tie for the points lead with the team of TK and Mez.

“I was a birdie machine on Saturday, and when I missed a few my partner was right there!” added McLovin.

It took a spectacular finish by TK, the tournament co-host, who made birdie net eagle on the final hole of the Miami Golf Invitational just to force a playoff. The pair of TK and Mez had been 18- and 36-hole leaders heading into the final round, and it was easy to see that the pressure was building with this duo.

In the playoff, teamed with Hockey Steve Goo, Casey McLovin drained a fast, side-hill breaking putt for birdie on one in dramatic fashion at the first playoff hole (his second natural birdie on one that day) at the inaugural and different Miami Golf Invitational Two-Man Shoot-Out to put the pressure on their opponents – Todd Keiper and Dr. Mez.

“Only on TV have I seen a putt like that, the putt stopped two inches from the hole and then hopped in” added Goleno “McLovin had his putter in the sky when that putt was still sliding and was 8 feet away.  It reminded me of Nicklaus in 86 at Augusta with that putt on 17 to take the lead….awesome!”

The media on hand which included the likes of Jimmy Roberts, Dan Nicks, and Roger Maltbie (who tried to get Gol 86’d from Shula’s steak house by Delvis until Gol pulled rank on him.) were awaiting with the Golf Channel camera crew, but it wasn’t over yet!

Mez had a shot to push the hole, but he lipped out his three foot putt to lose the championship. He was devastated by the missed opportunity, and Mez was immediately rushed away, and at the urging of Smiley and BBC, was checked into a suicide prevention clinic in nearby Fort Lauderdale. His stay was brief. It is rumored that through the night he feared TK assaulting him with a 5 iron.

“It was a lot of pressure to make that putt on 1 with everyone watching ……., in the Goleno Scramble I had scratch golfers McLovin and Belltower as my teammates so there was no pressure, and everything went in!” added Dr. Mez looking off into the clear blue sky “….. well, We did win that scramble though……”

TK didn’t help much in the playoff, who made bogey on the hole after topping his approach shot at the No. 1 hole at Shula’s Golf Club on the Senator Course.

I played great all week, but once we got to the playoff, I lost it …. I knew Casey would have my number, he always does….… “ said TK

Final Recap:

The format for this year at the MGI was certainly a different wrinkle.  On the final day the McLovin-Goo Duo was able to jump into the hunt with an 18-2 point whipping of Smiley-Lynch Duo.

The team of BK-Grant recorded a third-place finish at 57 points going 1-2-3 in six matches. The Lynch-Smiley (56) team was fourth. The all-Ohio squad of Harris-BBC posted fifth place at 54 points, while the long-shot duo of Gol-Bellflower were 21 points off the pace with 50.

Gol, I take a lot of the blame, holes 7 and 9 were struggles for me.  I think I hit every house on 7!” said a tired and mentally exhausted Bellflower.”

With rounds of 75-81-74, McLovin captured the Trophy for Low Gross. TK was runner up (74-83-78).

TK won the Skins Game trophy with five skins during the three-day affair, and of course Gol did birdie 5 on Saturday for a net 1, and a skin.

“It was good to reclaim 5 as my signature hole.  I didn’t expect on Saturday for it to only be 84 yards long, but everyone played from that same distance! To record a net ACE, not bad!”  twitter post from Goleno.

Goulla’s amazing efforts helped him win the inaugural Burt Keiper Sandbag Award for handicap irregularities. Goo entered as a 13 and shot 90-91-86 to raise some eyebrows?

“His conditioning for the MGI tournament each year is impressive…” said McLovin, “ I was honored to have him as a teammate!”

Other Tournament News:

  •  Gol withdrew from the rest of the Florida swing and checked himself into a rehab facility citing emotional stress from no longer being apart of Team TK.  “It is important that I am part of Team TK !  I need the team event back in 2014
  • The Mclovin and Guolla team also won the Horse Race competition (Alternate shot)  for another big cash prize.  They were pushed to the end by the Bellflower and Goleno team that came in 2nd (no cash prize.)
  • Mclovin, Mez, and Bellflower won the 2nd annual Goleno 9 hole scramble setting a tournament record -9 under.  Everyone participated this time, and it was a blast!
  • In the feel-good story of the year, Lynchie and his long-lost son Hightower were reunited after 22 years. DNA samples from the hot tub confirmed the relationship was legit. In 1989, Lynch confirmed that he was in Las Vegas.
  •  Bellflower won Rookie of the Year Honors. In related news, BBC captured *&^%_*& of the Year Honors becoming the first player in MGI history to miss a tee time. He caught up to his group mid-way through the front nine Friday.
  • Survivor Card Credit Roulette was evenly distributed with Mez, BK , Gol,  Smiley taking the honor on different occasions. “That is a crazy game, and it gets my blood pumping!” said rookie Bellflower.

MGI 2013 Vegas pre round recap

AP – January 27, 2013 MGI Vegas golf outing.

The MGI Vegas golf outing has turned into an annual tradition, as a warm up for the Miami Golf Invitational.  A few of the alumni of the MGI meet up around this time every year to discuss the upcoming event, and to play a round of golf.

On the tee this year were MGI veterans Allen Grant, Todd Keiper, and Craig Goleno.  The fourth member joining was MGI 2013 rookie Jeremy Bellflower.

It was nice to finally get the golf channel to come out and help with the official scoring and the television coverage.

Golf channel and Gol

On the range before the round, it was discussed what was at stake for the round.  As you can see from this video provided by Gol films and Golf Channel, it was for the other players driver!

The round got started and Allen Grant was hot!  He birdied 2 of the first 3 holes and never blinked the rest of the way.  He finished with 4 birdies, and finished with a 74.

He beat TK 6&5, and had TK saying to Gol, “I am making the turn shooting 39 and I am 5 down?”

He also handled the rookie as well with a 5&4 thrashing!

“I had to teach the kid a lesson about match play, for years I’ve been in Tk’s head.  After all,  I’ve been there so much I’ve got a timeshare. That timeshare cost me a few bucks back when the market was up, and it took me a few years to get it, but I got it!  Sunday I bought a new timeshare outright in Jeremy Bellflower’s head, and with real estate prices in the toilet it didn’t cost me much.  In fact after I dropped a bomb on him on 2, and followed it up with another birdie on 3.  I had my timeshare!”

The only person in the group that the rookie didn’t pay money too was Goleno, but he also didn’t collect any either.

Goleno added, “I hit some good shots, and I got my first birdie of 2013 already in the books with a 20 foot putt on the 155 yard par 3 8th hole.  It is always good to get that first birdie out of the way, and I am looking forward to some revenge on number 5 at the Senator!”

Oh we almost forgot, who won the driver? Todd shot a net 71, and Jeremy had a net 80.

Team TK Scouting Trip for 2013 MGI

Team TK is always looking to excel, and continue to win the MGI Cup, had scouts out at the PGA Expo in Las Vegas looking for new talent for the team.

That is where C Goleno discovered Jeremy Bellflower hitting balls on the launch monitor.

“We look forward to signing him to Team TK.  His swing is powerful, and his social skills are strong!” said C Goleno via his twitter post.  ”He topped out at 346 yards total with a Yonex custom made driver.  It was impressive.”

2012 PGA Championship Odds

The 94th PGA Championship at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, South Carolina is August 9-12.  The official Vegas odds are below.

Speculation: Look to bet on golfers that have history in that area, and those include: Snedeker, Byrd, and Kuchar, but don’t count out Dufner or Vijay.

2012 Gold Cup at Rainier Golf Club

The Gold Cup Member-Guest Invitational – July 12th-14th, 2012 – written by Craig Goleno

La Dolce Vita (the sweet life) of playing Rainier Golf and Country Club in the Annual Gold Cup was an opportunity presented to Craig Goleno that he could not refuse.

“My game was in shambles, but when Todd Keiper called and said get to Seattle for a golf party known as the Gold Cup, I was in!”

The weather was a welcome break from the 110 degree Vegas heat, as the temperatures in Seattle were in the upper 70’s.

Once I landed, we headed immediately to the course for an 18 hole practice round (walking) followed by a few TK’s in the clubhouse.  You do lose track of time in Seattle in the summer, as it seems as if it is daylight forever.

The tournament began Thursday.  There were eleven different six team flights, and we were in the colonial flight.  We had to play every team in our flight in a nine hole best ball match.  The scoring system was unique, and may be something we can use at the MGI to spice it up.

If your team won the hole you were received 2 points, lose it 0 points, and tie the hole each team receives one point.  Your team gets a 2 point bonus if you win the match, 1 point each if you tie, and 0 bonus points if you lose.  You played off the low cap guy in your group.

The Keiper/Goleno group played solid and finished second in our flight which did pay back some cash.  The final day drama was there with our final match being against the leaders in our flight – the Kane brothers.

“I rolled in a miracle putt on our first hole in the match to halve the hole, and the match was on…..but our work horse Todd ran out of fuel, but that was expected after carrying me for 36 holes”

If we had won our flight, we would have gone into the championship match with the other flight winners, but it wasn’t meant to be (see pictures below of all the golfers in carts watching the finals).

Other Highlights:

  •  The Keiper/Goleno group did come in second overall in the 66 team horse race event which was so much fun, and the first time I have ever been involved in something like this on the golf course.  I learned a new term when there where 10 teams on a tee box, and they said when you get to your ball just hit.  It is rambo golf.   Todd added  “To come in second overall, and beat some of the low cap guys straight up, yeah, that surprised me! Good win!”  See the presentation video below.
  • The Swag (see photos)
  • Great to see Jay D, Brooksy, Ashley, and everyone else that I have met up in Seattle.
  • The Rainier course was in beautiful shape, and is an incredible challenge.  Note: Pine trees on a course play a lot different than palm trees on a course.
  • TODD KEIPER WAS AN EXCELLENT HOST!

I hope to be able to do it again, as it was a fantastic golf event with a lot of great people and it was a blast.

2012 British Open Odds

The British Open, or The Open, will be played between July 19-22 at Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Course in Lancashire, England.

Below we provide the opening line odds from the Red Rock Casino in Las Vegas with a few of the golfers circled as the betting selections of the MGI handicapping team.

You will notice that again Tiger Woods is the local betting favorite at 7-1. (He is also 3.5-1 at this weeks AT&T National benefiting the Tiger Woods foundation.)  We don’t expect much out of the American golfers in this tournament, as the course is quirky and the field is strong and deep.

You will be able to see more on The Open (and all PGA, Champions, and LPGA tournaments) as they approach on Golf Talk Lounge.

2012 US Open at Olympic Club Odds to Win

The 2012 US Open is being played at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, California on June 14-17.

The early Las Vegas odds have Rory Mcilroy as a 7-1 favorite followed by Tiger and Phil at 10-1.  It is rare to see a Vegas sports book not have Tiger as the public favorite, but his play of late shows he likely will not be a contender.

“Tiger is hitting it better off the tee,” stated Allen G from Golf Talk Lounge, “but he is struggling with the mental fabric of his game.  The display of sportsmanship he put on at the Masters was an embarrassment to the game!”

Martin Kaymer skips one in for hole in one at Masters 2012

Martin Kaymer skips one in for hole in one at Masters 2012 practice round today (Tuesday).  The tradition of skipping the ball across the pond on 16 has gone on for years, but rarely results in an ace!

See this amateur footage of the shot. (MGI web team would like to apologize for the poor video quality in advance. Sam, you could have at least  got a better angle!)

Phil THRILLS

Phil wins at Pebble Beach, and joins rare company by winning his 4th Pebble Beach Pro-Am leaving only Mark O’Meara with more wins on this famed course.

Phil was playing in the 2nd to last group along side Tiger Woods, and the gallery was HUGE!  Phil out played Tiger by 11 strokes, and surged to the win!
